Stat of the Day: 18th February 2012

A disappointing run from Paul Nicholls’ Cedre Bleu yesterday, on a day of mostly disappointing runs for the stable (just one winner – Zarkandar, who should be marked up for so doing – from fifteen runners!).

Today is no easier, so I’m going to speculatively roll with a decent priced each way play in a telly race, the…

2.25 Ascot

We’ll have a crack at an ultra-competitive Listed handicap chase with a field of thirteen getting us a quarter the odds if we can land the place..

David Pipe’s mob may not be in the best of form, but he loves a winner at Ascot, as overall figures of sixteen from eighty (20%) and a level stakes profit of 52.03 testify.

He’s only got the one runner there this afternoon, Massini’s Maguire, who is a course and distance chase winner… in a Listed contest, to boot. Sure, he pulled up last time on ground that would have been plenty soft enough for him (official going soft, all MM’s jumping wins on good to soft or faster).

Today’s good to soft should be about spot on, he has a racing weight, and he’s only two pounds higher than when winning that course, distance, and class chase. 16/1 looks a big price for a horse which has been in the frame in six of his eight chase runs. But do…

  3. Another cracking winner Matt! Well done :)
Just a quick question Matt if you don’t mind? Re the E/W bets, up to now I’ve been splitting my stake in proportion to the odds. Is that the best way to go, or does it work out better splitting the stake evenly between the win and place?

Cheers Matt, keep ‘em coming :)

    • Hi Norry

Staking is a very personal choice, and I don’t feel qualified to comment in truth. I do generally offer some sort of a loose view in the piece. For instance, today I made it clear I was playing each way. Other times, when the odds don’t merit it, that will also be clear.

But how you bet is your business, I’m happy to report! :D

It’s my (and Chris, and anyone else entrusted with SotD duties) job to identify a stat which might be of interest each day…!

Hope that clarifies, and doesn’t come across as too much of a cop out.

    • Hi Lance

The results up to 8th February are in the comments here: http://www.geegeez.co.uk/stat-day-7th-feb-2012/

Obviously, with a few more winners, including one at 15.5 BSP, we’re on the gravy train again.

I suspect this is the best free service out there!

      Best,
      Matt

  7. Morning Matt

Belated thanks for the excellent selection of Massini’s Maguire on Saturday. I was a bit slow off the mark, but still got 12s having scraped out the remains of my Hills account for an e/w flutter.

I have dabbled with many tipping services over the years, Stat of the Day is the most reasoned I have come across and (almost unbelievably), it is free!!

Keep up the good work, it is well appreciated Matt.

    Cheers, Chris
