A nice enough 5/2 place (10/1 early price, placed at 1/4 odds) yesterday as My Boy Paddy plodded on into third. In truth, the way he finished this off looks like three miles is his trip. He went from cruising to nothing very quickly and, while that may have been fitness (second time off a long layoff), all his best ‘previous’ was on soft at three miles.

A lady for whom I have always held the utmost respect is that Williams lass, Venetia to be precise. She’s not just a great trainer, but also a great placer of horses, and she’s one of the trainers to keep onside for the big Cheltenham handicaps.
Her record at local Taunton is pretty good, and with hurdlers it’s Premier League. Twelve winners from 51 runners (24%) and a level stakes profit of 31.68 points is certainly not to be sniffed at.
Our problem? Venetia saddles two! The one of interest to me however is the hurdles debutant, Definite Memories, in the opener.
It’s a very competitive race in which to side with a newcomer, but this chap has actually run in – and won – a decent (ostensibly at least) point-to-point in Ireland, beating a subsequent point winner in Lady Milano.
With easy Newbury scorer Urbain de Sivola in the field (easy winner against Ranjaan last time), as well as promising beasts from the Nicholls, Hobbs and Scott yards, the SotD selection has plenty to do this afternoon. But Venetia’s record here commands respect, and I’m hoping Definite Memories is fit and ready to run for a place at around 14/1 currently.
In any case, this is a race to watch for clues. I’d expect at least one of these to end up at Cheltenham and perhaps two or three to be subsequently heading to Aintree. So do…

You’re in fine form at the minute and I hope today’s goes well. I see Venetia Williams had a winner at Carlisle yesterday – backed in to favourite.
My tip today is Border Reiver (note the Carlisle link!!!!) who is in the 425 at Wetherby. Has only won at that course and is down to its last winning rating over course distance going and 5/1 as well.
