We’ll claim a moral (and a small financial) victory for SotD from yesterday. We highlighted that Overturn would attempt to win from the front and that his trainer Donald McCain had a great record at Chester, based on a very small number of runners. Overturn did indeed make all until being overhauled a furlong from home by stablemate Ile de Ré. It wasn’t that he didn’t stay, because he battled on well to the end, but the winner stayed better and only two other horses finished within 20 lengths of our pick. It was also a nice 1-2 for Mr McCain: incidentally the Tote Exacta paid out at a whopping 138/1!
Today we’re heading North of the Border for a twilight test of stamina. It’s a three and a half mile Class 4 Handicap Chase. The going is currently offically Good and 16 runners are due to go to post, so Each Way backers can get paid on four places in the…
Trainer Ann Hamilton’s recent record in Kelso Handicaps is very encouraging: 4 wins and 2 places from just 9 attempts since the turn of 2011. Add into this the form of jockey Harry Haines in similar conditions, which reads 6 wins and 2 places from 20 rides in the past two years and you have the makings of a decent partnership. In fact , Harry has only ever ridden two in races for Mrs Hamilton, recording winners on both occasions at odds of 18/1 and 13/2.

The trip that day was some 3 furlongs shorter than today, but the ground was far more testing and he was still staying on at the end of over 3 miles on heavy going. Despite that victory, he stills looks quite reasonably treated and if he’s in the same heart as last time out, we should be set fair for at least a place. With that in mind, I’m going to jump on at the early price of 8/1 E/W BOG offered by bet365, but you can always come back and…
