Kempton 3.35 BETBRIGHT CHASE (Saturday)
FGR Rankings – Thomas Brown, Virak
Thomas Brown – unexposed novice chaser; has won two of three starts over fences to date. Has yet to prove himself in the hurly burly of a race of this nature, and is probably best on a more galloping track, but is open to progression with underfoot conditions ideal.
Virak – Has has a habit of finding one too good so far this season, finishing second on his last three starts (possibly unlucky at Ascot the outing before last). Looks sure to take a hand, especially with the Nicholls yard in such rude health, but softer ground wouldn’t go amiss.
Paul Nicholl’s has a line with Thomas Brown through Le Mercury, who beat the Harry Fry horse at Ascot in December, and at 16-1 there are worse each-way bets in the world than backing Virak to place again. Thomas Brown, available at 8’s, has more than enough scope to progress past the Nicholls horse though, but may not be suited by this tighter track.
I’ve decided to keep my powder dry in this. If you must have a bet I’d recommend either a small win bet on Thomas Brown or a small each-way bet on Virak. But put any losses down to yourself rather than your bank.
