FGR Preview – Hennessy Gold Cup (Saturday, November 28th, 2015)
Newbury 3.00 Saphir Du Rheu, Bobs Worth
Saphir Du Rheu is very much the apple of Paul Nicholls’ eye and the horse couldn’t of been more impressive when easily accounting for The Young Master at Carlise when making his seasonal debut. Appeared to put his his jumping problems behind him that day, but Saturdays race will be the acid test as he’s unproven in the hurly burly of a seventeen runner field.
Bobs Worth won the corresponding race in 2012 but has had his well publicised problems since as he simply hasn’t been the same horse. Won a Aintree hurdle as a prep race for this and connections are hopeful that the horse is somewhere back to near his best, in which case he could run a very big race.
Smad Place also featured in my top two rated at the ante-post stage, but as I’ve said previously, he tends to play the bridesmaid in these Class 1 races and has yet to prove conclusively that he stays 3m2f. Having said all that he has been laid out for the race and Alan King is very keen on his chance.
Bobs Worth has the edge on proven ability, although wether he can reproduce it is still a matter of conjecture. Consequently, I would be tempted to side with Saphir Du Rheu in this, but he doesn’t appeal as a betting opportunity in such a large field given his previous jumping issues.
