FGR – Best Of The Day
No luck at Newbury yesterday, with Maximiser hitting the deck when attempting to make all and failing to get the landing gear out after appearing to jump the fence well enough. But jumping is the name of the game so there’s no complaints on that score.
Today is Hennessy day, of course, and I think Paul Nicholls’ Saphir Du Rheu is the horse to beat with Bob’s Choice and Smads Place both holding strong place claims, but the race itself doesn’t figure in today’s shortlist, which is…
Newcastle 1.00 Ballydine
Newcastle 2.05 Irving
Newbury 12.15 Tea In Transvaal
Ballydine is an unexposed, progressive type. Won a maiden hurdle at Stratford last time and has sound enough claims here. The concern is the current wellbeing of the Charlie Longsdon yard which isn’t quite firing at present.
Irving beat Top Notch in the Betfair Price Rush Hurdle at Haydock last Saturday when carrying our money. Top Notch may not progress as much as I first thought as Nicky Henderson insists he was fit on the day. So given that Irving won this race last year he must have a decent chance of following up, especially with the ground in his favour.
Tea In Teansvaal is a progressive mare, but she didn’t appear to get up the hill at Cheltenham last time, so may be vulnerable on this galloping track given the very testing ground. She does set the standard on the figures though.
I’m keen to take on Willie Mullins’ Wicklow Brave in the Fighting Fifth this afternoon, so my best of the day is…
Newcastle 2.05 IRVING @ 100-30 BOG
…as he apparently finished his race fresh enough last time, and can also be backed with Paddy Power as a MBS.
