The pick of the week's racing news

Best of the Rest… 23rd February 2016

In the first in a new series, geegeez.co.uk brings you a curation of the pick of the posts from around the web. We appreciate that, despite the insightful editorial we publish here, there are others who produce informative and entertaining content. This new weekly post will attempt to round up some of the best...

BHA Handicapper's Blog, 16th February

The official handicappers at BHA produce a blog roughly every fortnight in which they discuss the more high profile efforts of merit, and justify the ratings consequently allotted. It is worth a read as much for a clearer understanding of the process of handicapping as for the actual numbers themselves.

This article can be found here.

Older articles from the BHA handicapper can be found here.

Timeform logoSimon Rowlands' Sectional Debrief, 22nd February

Although the ratings over at Timeform tend to have too much of a causal relationship on betting markets to render them especially useful, the Halifax squad continue to produce some fascinating editorial output. On my weekly 'must read' list is Simon Rowlands' always compelling Sectional Debrief.

This week, Sectional Debrief covers the Saturday jumps meetings at Ascot and Haydock and includes some context around how and why the numbers are useful. Well worth a look for intermediate to experienced bettors.

ATR LogoKevin Blake's blog, 22nd February

Kevin Blake writes thoughtfully about many aspects of horseracing, using data to support articles which span both the British and Irish racing scenes. Whilst I don't always personally agree with his conclusions, they are a fine read and I've taken away many snippets and nuggets which I'd otherwise not have known about.

This week he looks at a killer stat relating to Ruby Walsh - the best jockey riding doesn't come out best here... in fact, he comes out worst!

Kevin's latest blog can be read here.

Guardian LogoChris Cook reports on Victoria Pendleton's Fakenham Mishap

Olympic cyclist turned amateur jump jockey, Victoria Pendleton, has had a mixed reception from those within racing as she continues to cross boundaries with the wider sporting world in her bid to ride in the Cheltenham Foxhunters' Chase. But, as Chris Cook reports, not everyone is in her corner...

SportingLife logoGraham Cunningham's Pick 6 Column, 22nd February

In his latest sportinglife column, Graham Cunningham argues that "win and you're in" would be a good incentive for some of the National trials; a spot of value in the Champion Hurdle market; and views on other topical racing debates besides. It's all here.

Irish Independent logoRichie Forristal's Monday column, 22nd February

Moving his perspective from Ireland to UK, Richie applauds the strong stance of Nick Rust and the BHA on the ABP issue, and suggests further conformity is imminent. Another very good read.

Cheers Matt – lots of good stuff there.

(As an aside, any chance you can arrange for me to be in Victoria Pendleton’s corner, or vice-versa?)

Interesting and a good read, confirmed my opinions on Pendleton having had too few rides under rules and Ruby’s almost asleep riding style leading to mistakes at the last fence. Great stuff lets have more.
