Yesterday, I wrote about trainers whose records are worth noting, either positively or negatively, at the Breeders' Cup. That post is here. Today, let's look at jockeys through the same porthole...
Top Breeders' Cup Jockeys
The leading jockey in Breeders' Cup history, with 21 wins from 111 rides, is Mike Smith. He's been responsible for steering the likes of Zenyatta and Drosselmeyer to Classic glory, but he may be remembered more than anything for not quite getting to Blame in the 2010 renewal of the great race when riding Zenyatta in her swansong.
His strike rate of 19% is excellent for such a big meeting, and he will again have a great book of rides, headlined by Songbird, favourite for Saturday's opening race, the Juvenile Fillies.
Next in on number of winners is Johnny V, or John Velazquez as he's better known. JV has claimed the plaudits on 13 occasions, though punters need to be wary of his measly 9.35% strike rate. Those thirteen winners came at the expense of 126 losers. Ouch. The pick of Johnny V's eleven BC mounts could be Rachel's Valentina in the Juvenile Fillies, though of course he'll need to beat Mike Smith!
More of a punters' pal is the evergreen Frankie Dettori, a respected pilot around the world in spite of a colourful career and occasional clownish antics. His record more than justifies the reverence: 11 winners from just 82 BC starts, for a 13.4% strike rate. Frankie has seven rides, four of which are currently 5/1 or shorter, including odds on Turf jolly, Golden Horn.
Looking specifically at the the jockeys with the highest strike rates from ten or more Breeders' Cup starts, Ryan Moore's 6 from 33 - all since 2008 - make him a man for whom to keep an eye out. He's currently legged up on nine BC horses, five of which are 4/1 or shorter, and which include even money FM Turf favourite, Legatissimo.
At the other end of the spectrum, Jamie Spencer has now gone 18 BC rides without a win, though he couldn't have been any closer to breaking his duck on his most recent start: Toast Of New York was denied by a nose, and by a stewards' enquiry, of their claim to the 2014 BC Classic.
He has just the big priced juvenile turf filly, Mirage, to ride on Friday's card.
But it is the American Pharoah's jockey, Victor Espinoza, who will be the biggest name on the cold list. He's ridden 53 BC contenders, with just two winners (3.8%) and only eight even making the frame (15%). In fairness to Victor, his wins were on Spain at 56/1 in the 2000 Distaff, and Take Charge Brandi at 62/1 in last year's Juvie Fillies!
Below is the full list of past and present pilots for you to peruse and ponder their prior performance.
p.s. Isn't it time you got hold of my Breeders' Cup Compendium? Nine of the thirteen races are now complete, with just four grass events to finish. I'm trying to get a read on the state of the turf track before writing those up, as going is obviously crucial to betting decisions.
