A decent enough place double yesterday, paying 4/1, without either horse especially looking like winning, in truth. Today, I'm going to take a bit more of a chance in what look to be a pair of very competitive handicaps. Nothing ventured, and all that.

We'll take leg one in the...

5.00 Chepstow

Bally Legend has been chasing, and he's been going well in that sphere, with a 3221U recent record. That last time out unseat might be the reason connections revert to hurdles here, and he has strong claims on the pick of his timber-topping past exploits. Today's race is a Class 3 handicap hurdle over two and a half miles on good to soft ground.

Our boy has won in Class 3 handicap hurdles three times, the last one off a mark of 131: today he races off 132. His record on good to soft (two wins) and at around two and a half miles (one win, two seconds) includes plenty of competitive runs, and all looks set for another main stage performance. He's a 10/1 shot as I write.

I'm coupling him up with ...

Embsay Crag looks the one here. He has always been a fast ground horse on the flat, and managed to win a Class 3 handicap in that sphere. Here, he's now dropped to Class 4 handicap hurdles, having run well in higher grade this time last year. His handicap mark has dropped from 115 to 105 off the back of four runs on soft and heavy ground, which he will have largely deplored, and this return to a surer footing will be extremely welcome.

He has a course and distance win in a novice hurdle (Class 4) to his name, so there are no worries on that score, and a little nibble in the market this morning reassures me that there is confidence behind his chance. He remains around the 6/1 mark.

The double pays a whopping 76/1 and the place part will return over 11/2 with Boylesports, best odds guaranteed.

Back Bally Legend and Embsay Crag in an each way double with Boylesports with the win part paying 76/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)

Nice little place double yesterday Matt. Pity my selections didn’t add anything to the pot as one didn’t run and one didn’t run fast enough.
I’ve backed your dabble today and added Johnny Splash (4.10 Ling) plus Glennacreim (5.30 Cheps) to make for a whopping yankee if they all pull their hooves out !
    All the best
    Cheers

Huge ground change at Chepstow, resulting in 23 non-runners (at time of writing). Soft didn’t especially suit our Bally Legend, who plugged on slowly in fifth. 🙁
