Daily Dabble, 1st June 2013

May ended pretty much as it had run throughout the month ie largely fruitless and often frustrating. We drew another blank yesterday, as our first selection Viking Warrior could only manage to finish 5th after wakening late on. We weren't the only people backing him, though, as he went off at 4/1: backed in from our 8/1 bet.

The second horse Small Fury fared even worse, I'm afraid and finished 10th of 11. There may well have been something amiss yesterday as this was by far the worst run she'd had to date. She faded away with almost half of the 5 furlong race left, which doesn't sit well with her previous attempts. Nevertheless, it meant a total loss on the day.

Well, it's June already and it kicks off with Derby Day, so it'd be rude of us not to follow suit. Our first selection today runs in the...

4.00 Epsom (The Derby)

Yes, Dawn Approach is the best horse in the field, but it doesn't always pan put that way and the shortness in the market of the favourite means there's value for his rivals, namely Ruler Of The World (currently as big as 9/1), who has both his starts to date and definitely stays 1m4f, whilst there some small doubts over the favourite's ability to do so (probably unfounded, however!). He ran away with the Chester Vase last time and won't mind a bit of cut in the ground today. We know he'll get the trip and therefore seems the most likely should favourite not be at his best.

5.40 Worcester

Dolatulo has been having a really good time of it over fences of late, rattling off back to backs wins in April, after already having won a NH Flat race at the end of March. He's had five weeks rest since completing the hat trick and should be fresh for a return to hurdling today, where he runs off a mark 5lbs lower than he would in a chase. He's trainer Warren Greatrex's sole runner today and the yard are 2 from 4 here at Worcester, whilst the horse itself has a record of two wins and a second in Class 3 contests such as todays. He looks decent enough value at odds of up to 8/1.

The double pays 89/1 today and the place part is priced at just under 15/2 (7.45/1), both with William Hill (BOG, of course!).

Back Ruler Of The World and Dolatulo in an each way double with William Hill, the win part paying 89/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)
