It was one of those bitter-sweet days yesterday, as things didn't quite drop into place for us with what might have looked just a speculative punt to many.

Yet I didn't fancy Battle of Marengo yesterday and was fairly sure he wouldn't win and sided with 14/1 shot Contributer, who ran an excellent race and was only denied a place late in the final furlong by the faster finishing Mutashaded.

This meant that the race in Ireland was rendered irrelevant for the double, but recent form (50% place strike rate) suggested that Sod's Law would strike again and so it was, as Papaya stepped up in trip by three furlongs and was only caught inside the last of those three extras!

She eventually finished third, just over a couple of lengths shy of breaking her maiden tag at the second attempt and good value for her 7/1 tag. She's possibly one to back next time out.

None of this, however, brings any profit to the table: an issue I hope to rectify with today's pair, starting with the...

2.25 Ayr

I fancy Silken Express to continue her steady progress over 5 furlongs today, where her record reads 21221. She was 6th at Goodwood last time out on her first attempt at 6 furlongs, as she seemed to run out of steam late on. A return to the minimum trip should be more than enough for her to be a contender today. No massive prices here today, but a solid selection at odds of around 11/2, which should hopefully set us up nicely for the...

7.20 Haydock

Where Diman Waters looks a good prospect for Eric Alston. The Alston yard is flying at the moment with eight winners and six further placed horses from twenty-five runners in the last month. Diman Waters has won twice over today's trip, including a course and distance win here last year and races just 2lbs higher than he did that day. He was fifth last time out over C&D nine days, where he was in the group if runners that chose the "wrong" side of the track that day. He was, however, the clear leader of that pack and had he been with the leading group, would have stood every chance. He's been dropped 1lb today, which should help and he's currently available at 5/1

The double pays 38/1 BOG today with Coral, with the place element running at almost 15/4 (3.725/1)

Back Silken ExpressDiman Waters in an each way double with Coral, the win part paying 38/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)
