Daily Dabble, 30th May 2013
The Daily Dabble tale of woe / frustration / disappointment continued unabated yesterday as our first selection Chocala duly did the business in race one: we got on at 6/1 and was returned a very comfortable 3/1 winner. This meant we'd a nice wager on Mount Welcome twenty minutes later and this is where we got that deja vu feeling.
He ran far too keenly and wide in the early stages, but got it together to lead in the last two furlongs, he was headed before rallying to regain the lead. Unfortunately he emptied out pretty quickly and it was painful viewing as he seemed to tread water in the closing stages, not only losing the lead, but eventually finishing a half-length outside the places. At 15/2 we were looking at a nice 58/1 win double, but had to settle for nothing at all.
But that's racing for you, I was at least happy that the picks weren't duffers this time, but we do need better and hopefully the following pair will come home for us...
Where I'm looking to Mafi to get the ball rolling for us, as he reopposes the favourite Midnight Feast on more favourable terms this evening. 3lbs better off in this contest than he was when finishing a length adrift back in 3rd place over Course and Distance three weeks ago. He himself is a triple C&D winner here and is in decent form at present, making the frame on six occasions from nine races in 2013, winning two of them in a sequence of results reading 261135733. He should give the favourite a much stiffer challenge today and looks reasonably priced at 8/1.
The lightly raced Flameseeker is of interest here. He progressed nicely in his three outings last term. A seven lengths defeat back in 7th place on debut was followed by him finishing as runner-up to Duke of Marengo breaking his own maiden tag: that one has, of course, gone on to record victories in Listed / Group company. I'm not suggesting that our selection is anywhere near that good, but he did follow up that run with a win at Listowel (1 mile on heavy). So, it's a win and a place from 3 attempts and I don't think the step up in trip should be an issue: he showed in that win at Listowel that he has plenty of stamina and the ground is far better today. He looks to have plenty of scope for further improvement and should give the weight-conceding favourite Seussical a good run for his money at odds of up to 7/1.
The double pays 71/1 today and the place part is priced at just under 21/4 (5.24/1), both with Bet365 (BOG, of course!).
Back Mafi and Flameseeker in an each way double with Bet365, the win part paying 71/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)
