Daily Dabble, 4th July 2013
Well, after all the conjecture and debate about whether it would rain or not in Perth or whether Cool Baranca would "get" the going or not, it was my "safer" pick Hill of Dreams who let us down. They call it Sod's Law, I suppose after the selection of Cool Baranca was vindicated to a point as she battled on to finish third at 11/2. She was admittedly a good 12 lengths shy of winning, but managed to put clear daylight (11 lengths) between her and the 4th placed horse.
All of which set us up nicely for surefire placer Hill of Dreams or so I thought. I felt she was held up a little too long and as such had plenty of traffic in front of her and by the time she got going the race was lost and she finished back in 7th of the 9 runners, a couple of lengths away from the money.
Back to back races for you today, up in the North West, starting with the...
Based purely on the price of 10/1, Argent Knight might look a speculative type of punt here, but his record of 122 in his three handicap runs to date (all over this trip) suggest he'll be there or thereabouts again this afternoon. Second last time out over course and distance here off the same mark as today, he looked to be travelling best of all but couldn't put the race away, he wears a visor for the first time today and it is hoped that the application of this headgear will help focus his efforts towards the latter stages.
The presence of a fairly short priced favourite here means we'll get a decent price about our selection Emmuska. She's 11144012 over this trip and was 2nd last time out at Chepstow over today's trip on softer ground than this. She runs off the same mark of 68 today on a much firmer surface, which should be more to her liking, for she has won over this trip on the A/W off a mark of 75 just two runs ago. Due to the favourite being priced as low as 7/4 in a nine horse race, we're able to get good E/W odds of around 13/2 today for this one.
