Double Dutch, 8th March 2014
It was one of those one from two days on Friday, where we got close, but not close enough.
Handicap debutant Mysteree justified market support by winning at 13/8, whilst Los Nadis was pulled up, but this meant we'd two shots at the double half an hour later.
Mister Marker had drifted out to 4/1 by the time the race started by a 5-length defeat into second place was as good as it got, for our main hope Wicklow Lad somewhat floundered coming home last of the four finishers (5 ran), some 53 lengths behind the winner.
Yesterday's results were as follows:
Mysteree: won at 13/8 (adv 15/8)
Los Nadis: PU at 7/2 (adv 7/2)
Mister Marker: 2nd at 4/1 (adv 5/2)
Wicklow Lad: 4th (of 5) at 6/4 (adv 2/1)
Results to date:
172 winning selections from 610 = 28.20%
57 winning bets in 161 days = 35.40%
P/L : +41.82pts (+13.15% ROI)
There's a Celtic feel to today's action:
Kilcrea Asla won this race last year and is expected to put up a strong defence of the title here today. The 13 yr old veteran comes here on the back of a battling win at Haydock last time out, where he stayed on well to land a better quality race than this one over a slightly longer trip. He's 221 at this trip and obviously has course form via last years success. The conditons underfoot shouldn't be a problem and he stands a good chance here at 5/2 BOG with Betfred.
The interesting runner here is Consigliere, who we normally see every March. But Cheltenham is normally the destination for this one, but David Pipe has opted to send him here today instead. He has shown sign sof getting back to some decent form and has been taking advantage of the fact hat his handicap mark is finally slipping from the mid 140's of old. He's now down at 135, just a pound higher than when finishing second at Newcastle in the mud last time out.
His odds of 7/4 BOG with Betfred might seem a little skinny, but this horse is a former Group standard runner and with his jockey taking 7lbs off that attractive 135 mark, he'll be hard to beat here.
Man With Van was a winner on debut in an Irish points race before embarking on a career under rules. A fifth place at Navan over 2 miles was followed by back to back wins over today's 2.5 mile trip. He now comes over the water to attempt the hat-trick for the familiar Irish raiding Team Crawford. He may well be up 13lbs for that last win, but he was probably quite under-rated previously and he is till very unexposed. There's not a lot of competition here today and 5/2 BOG looks fair, if not spectacular.
Forward Flight threatens to be the biggest potential fly in the ointment and this is a horse who has made a consistently good start to his racing career with two wins and four further places from just seven starts. He was last seen winning over today's trip on soft ground at Sedgefield, where he ran out a 15 lengths winner. That race was just five days ago, though and we have to hope this doesn't come too soon for him.
He carries a 7lb penalty from that win, which could quite easily have been double or treble that 15-length margin, had he been ridden out to a finish, so at bottom weight for this one, he still looks leniently treated for this one and the amount of weight he receives all round could be the decisive factor for him. He can currently be backed at 2/1 BOG with Bet365.
4 x 0.5pt BOG doubles, as follows:
Consigliere / Forward Flight @ 6.88/1 (13/8 & 2/1 : Bet365)
Consigliere / Man With Van @ 8.63/1 (7/4 & 5/2 : Betfred)
Kilcrea Asla / Forward Flight @ 8.34/1 (9/4 & 15/8 : BetVictor & Hills)
Kilcrea Asla / Man With Van @ 11.25/1 (5/2 & 5/2 : Betfred)
