Glorious Goodwood – Top Trainers

With Glorious Goodwood this week Andy Newton gives you six yards with impressive figures at the West Sussex track to look out for.

MAHMOOD AL ZAROONI

Goodwood Track Record: (10 from 39, 26%)
Current Overall Strike-rate: 2 winners from their last 17 runners, 12%

Their last winner came on Saturday at HQ, but really of the two Godolphin operations it’s been the Saeed Bin Suroor yard that are finding more winners of late. Al Zarooni will be hoping with his excellent record at the Goodwood track that this can turn around this week and with plenty of entries then it will be a surprise if they can’t fire at least one winner in.  It might be best to ignore their older horses with just 1 winner from their last 8, but keep an eye for any 2 year-olds (5 from 18) and more importantly their 3 year-olds as they are 4 from just 13.

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE

Goodwood Track Record: (22 from 106, 21%)
Current Overall Strike-rate: 9 winners from their last 28 runners, 32%

Of those mentioned, not only do the Stoute team have a cracking record at Goodwood, but they are arguably also coming into the meeting in the best form too. With 9 recent winners, and plenty of other placed efforts then jockey Ryan Moore could be in for a great week. Yes, the stable are still only on 39 winners for the season after a slow start, but in this sort of form they will race past the 50 mark soon and will play a bit part in the jockeys’ title race. Just 1 from 7 with their juveniles at the track and only 4 from 35 with their older horses, but it’s their 3 year-olds we should be noting – they are 17 from 64 (27%).

JEREMY NOSEDA

Goodwood Track Record: (15 from 73, 21%)
Current Overall Strike-rate: 3 winners from their last 15 runners, 20%

One of the more ‘quality over quantity’ yards and with just 17 winners from 112 runners so far this season this is further backed up. They’ve fired in between 40-60 winners in each of the last seven seasons and although they’ve lacked a few big winners in recent years they are still a yard to be respected – especially at this track.

LUCA CUMANI

Goodwood Track Record: (17 from 83, 20%)
Current Overall Strike-rate: 3 winners from their last 21 runners, 14%

The stable had Afsare run a close second in the York Stakes last Saturday, while their last winner came at Yarmouth on Monday. During their last 21 runners they’ve also have 4 seconds, and a whole host that have finished 4th, 5th and 6th. With that in mind, despite only having a few winners of late, their horses seem to be running well and with their impressive Goodwood record then it will be a shock if they can’t bag at least one winner this week.

SIR HENRY CECIL

Goodwood Track Record: (13 from 65, 20%)
Current Overall Strike-rate: 2 winners from their last 19 runners, 11%

Very similar current stats to Cumani with just a few winners of late, but again they’ve had plenty of placed runners too that suggests all is well at the Warren Place yard. Frankel on Wednesday in the Sussex Stakes is, of course, where all the focus will be and it will be one of the sporting shocks of all time if he’s beaten at around 1/20. Elsewhere they also have their consistent mare Chachamiadee going in the Lennox Stakes and Noble Mission, Frankel’s brother, in the Gordon Stakes on the opening day. They are 0-from-3 with their juveniles at the track, but it’s with their older horses they excel – being 10 from 28 in that age bracket.

ROGER CHARLTON

Goodwood Track Record: (10 from 49, 20%)
Current Overall Strike-rate: 3 winners from their last 18 runners, 17%

A yard that have often done well, not only at the track, but also at the Glorious Goodwood meeting and with 10 of their last 19 runners finishing 4th or better it’s clear they are heading into the five days in decent form. James Doyle will be their main man in the saddle – he’s been on two of their three recent winners, while their veteran Mac Love will be hoping to add another course win to his name in the Lennox Stakes.   No juvenile winners from their last 5 sent to post here at Goodwood, but with a 23% strike-rate with their 3 year-olds and their older horses then these could be the ones to focus on.
