July Cup Field have Stars in their Eyes

Friday’s July Cup at Newmarket will see nine of the top 11 starters in June's Golden Jubilee Stakes again doing battle for the honours.

In his efforts to follow on from his Golden Jubilee victory in the Darley July Cup last Friday, Starspangledbanner will take to the track facing 13 contenders.

The superior standing of the former Australian sprinter was lived up to when he blew away from his challengers at Royal Ascot.

Victor of the Royal Ascot event, Aidan O'Brien's Starspangledbanner, will be challenged once more by second placed Society Rock, third placed Kinsale King and fourth place getter Fleeting Spirit.

Also included in the field are: Balthazaar's Gift (seventh), Varenar (eighth), Prime Defender (ninth), Serious Attitude (10th), Marchand D'Or (11th) and Australian raider Alverta (14th).  All will need to firm up their positions in the tough line-up for the £400,000 Newmarket Group 1 event.

The Australian invasion continues with the David Hayes Nicconi still over here and favorably regarded for the fourth place finish in the King's Stand at Ascot.

Replacing Frankie Dettori in the saddle on the Italian ride Fleeting Spirit is top Australian jockey Damien Oliver.

After performing considerably well over five furlongs, King’s Stand champ Equiano will step back up to six.

The inconsistent Kingsgate Native has Sir Michael Stoute seeking an improved run, while Showcasing will have the aid of first-time blinkers, after finishing in last place though being well favoured for the Golden Jubilee.

The same day will also see the running of the former Bunbury Cup, now known as the 32Red Trophy.   The big 7 furlong handicap has attracted the maximum field of 20, with William Knight’s Palace Moon topping the starters and the weights have been raised 5lb.
