With a track record time,Yaa Wayl defended a two pronged Godolphin challenge to grab a victory the Listed, Sky Bet City of York Stakes on Friday.
The Michael Jarvis trained the three year old held off near the back of the field, while Carnaby Street and Red Jazz challenged one another for the front position.
Red Jazz had gotten the best on his challenger and remained with a short lead as the competitors widened across the course within the final 500 yards. But the Frankie Dettori mount and Saeed Bin Suroor trained, Skysurfers pushed on well taking lead, before Yaa Wayl blitzed to the front with almost a furlong to go.
The Philip Robinson mount stayed on well in the final furlong, running on to a half-length victory over Skysurfers, recording a time of 1m 21.93, a new track record by 0.05 seconds.
"When you've got a horse with a big heart, like him, it makes a big difference," said Robinson
"It would be nice to think he could win a little Group 3 race somewhere; he deserves it."
"And," he went on, "I dare say Michael will find an opportunity for him."
