On second thoughts… Newbury relents on dress code

Family day out at Newbury?

Family day out at Newbury?

The re-branding earlier this year of Newbury racecourse as The Racecourse, Newbury, brought with it a revised dress code. It wasn’t as severe as the one at Ascot, but it was enforced, with the result that plenty of racegoers at the Hennessy meeting were either turned away or obliged to nip into town and buy something more suitable.

For the December meetings at least, there has been a change of heart as Newbury seeks to avoid the negative publicity it received as last month. Tomorrow and on 28 December smart casual is the order of the day in the Premier Enclosure.

Last week, the course appointed former Aintree managing director Julian Thick as its new chief executive, and he began work yesterday. The two things are probably connected.

The course website set out the revisions to the revised dress code yesterday, and whilst those in the posh stand will continue to have to eschew sportswear, trainers, bare chests and ripped denim, they will be allowed in with smart jeans.

For those in the Grandstand enclosure the same restrictions apply, but anyone in fancy dress won’t be turned away. Perhaps those Christmas jumpers will have an outing before they are consigned to the charity shops.
