Race of the Day – 16 July

Race of the Day - 15:50 Newmarket

Today we head to Newmarket and a nice looking fillies and mares Listed race run over one and a half miles on good ground. At first glance it appears to be a tough one to pick through, with some nice looking, improving three year olds going up against some good experienced horses.

Hugo Palmer runs Twitch, who looks to have some solid enough recent form without getting her head in front. However, from the green characters under Palmer's name we can see that he has been in fine recent form. By clicking the black trainer icon under the horses name, the drop down box shows us that his 14 and 30 day form has been great, with good profits in the win P/L. Riding for him today is James Mcdonald, and when looking at his form (click on the jockey icon) we can see that it is superb, both his current form, and form at this course. Over the past year he has won over 26% of his races here and been placed in 60% of them, producing large P/L figures for both.

When looking at the Instant Expert place tab, although Stockhill Diva is making the step up from handicaps and therefore doesn't have any form on class, the rest of her line is green, meaning that everything else appears in her favour today. The same can be said of Forever Popular, who has the same green line and importantly for both of these runners, they are at home on today's going.

As this race is over one and a half miles, pace might not necessarily be as important as in the sprints, however looking at the pace tab we can see that horses that have led have a good record, as can be expected. It also shows us that there are a lot of runners in this race that like to be held up, with just two, Shall We and Twicth, as confirmed front runners. It could play out that if they are allowed a soft lead, with the others all sat in behind biding their time, then they may be able to get away from the rest of the field and not be pegged back.

When combining the pace with the draw, it shows us that the most profitable angle, albeit from a relatively low sample size, is for horses that are drawn mid-high and have raced prominently. These horses have shown good profit figures for win and place. Twitch is drawn in stall eight, so mid to high and therefore ticks both of those boxes.

A look at the current odds at the time of writing shows how open this race is. The plus point being that when using the Geegeez Gold tools, there is the potential to find a horse that has a great chance at a nice price.

Checked this column 4 times so far and had a winner, a non-runner and 2 big priced seconds. Great stuff, and an excellent introduction to some sections of the form guides I hadn’t used before.

Thanks buskin. That’s exactly our intention: to showcase the content, ideally by finding horses that run close to winning!!
