Race of the Day – 17 Oct

Race of the Day - 15:10 Pontefract

We start the week off at Pontefract, and a one mile and two furlongs handicap on soft ground.

Champion jockey Jim Crowley rides Vivre Pour Vivre, and any horse he has been on board over the past few weeks has been worth a second look. The green characters below his name signify good form over the past 14 and 30 days, if you then click on the jockey icon below the horse name, you can see this in more detail.

Over the past 30 days, Crowley has ridden 193 times and had 42 winners (21.76%) for a P/L to level stakes of 45.96. This is incredible going and it will be interesting to see how far this form drops off now the championship has been secured.

Giantstepsahead stands out on first glance at the Instant Expert tab. He hasn't raced here at Ponterfract before, but he has good scores on the rest of the sections including on today's soft going, so he looks interesting at a nice price. He has previously raced a lot on the all weather, however this is just his second run for his new trainer Alan Bailey and both of these starts will have been on the turf.

Over this course and distance, horses that have lead the race early on have gone on to win almost 20% of the time. Pontefract can often prove to be a tough course to make up ground on, with hold up horses not having a great record here.

Giantstepsahead is a definite confirmed front runner, and I think that Muscutt will go straight to the head of affairs on him again today. He stays further than the ten furlongs that they are racing over, so it is likely he will try and make this a proper test, and hope to have enough to hold on.

Empress Ali is a another who is always very handy, and it looks likely it will be these two runners that get out fast. They are drawn numbers one and two as well, therefore the pace looks certain to come from the low numbers.

The Hot Form report is an excellent tool for judging the merit of a horse's recent run. Rockwood finished third last time out, going down by less than a length. Hot Form shows us that the race in question has produced two winners and two placed horses from just the four runners subsequently. Therefore, an increase of just one pound for that third place could mean that Rockwood is nicely weighted here, and could produce a strong run.
