The Trainer Snippets report shows what an outstanding record John Gosden has with horses making their second start. From his last 230 such runners, he's had 70 winners (30.43%) and (53.48%) for level stakes profits of 43.66 and 18.66. This has also produced an Impact Value of 2.80, meaning he is almost three times more likely than average to have the winner.
His runners come on a whole heap after their first run, evidenced by an increase in strike rate from around 17% to around 30%.
Mythological makes his second start today after a pretty uninspiring first run.
Mythological's first run was over a mile at Windsor where he was slow at the start, didn't settle, and hung left as they went around the right-handed bend there.
That run will have hopefully given him a bit of knowledge of what is required and it looks a telling jockey booking that Ryan Moore takes over from Robert Havlin today.
Gosden has been in decent enough form recently, as over the past month he's managed 20 winners at a strike rate of 20.83% and an Impact Value of 2.17.
He also has reasonable course form at Newmarket and actually has a level stakes profit of 16.28 from 486 runners over the past five years.
Ryan Moore has been in excellent form over the past month, where he has had 19 winners (27.94%) and 31 places (45.59%) from 68 runners for level stakes profits of 15.12 and 3.60 respectively, and an Impact Value of 2.90.
He also does well here at Newmarket with a strike rate of over 20% for the past year which produces an Impact Value of almost 2.
Mythological steps up to ten furlongs for his second run and the extra two furlongs will hopefully help him settle a little better.
He is a Galileo colt so this distance should be well within his range even at this early stage in his career, and Galileo has a terrific record with two-year-olds, producing a strike rate of almost 5% higher than his average.
In what looks a wide-open maiden, Mythological is a slightly speculative selection but based on very solid form for Gosden with such horses.
