Amy Ryan savoured a perfect first time out for Mark Johnston, in the 32red Casino Handicap at Newmarket, as she held on in a spirited finish on Sea Lord.
Johnston's son, Charlie, recommended Ryan, the daughter of trainer Kevin Ryan, whose important 5lb claim gave her a favourable edge as her mount held out by a neck.
Ryan had victory in her sights during the entire ride and in the closing stages fought off heavy challenges by First Cat and Dance East to claim the prize.
Johnston said, "I can't remember Amy riding for us before and booking her was only a last minute decision.
"I rang my son who is in South Africa and asked him who the best apprentice who could claim 5lb is and he recommended Amy.
"This horse is climbing the ratings and we may have to look at a Group race next."
