Soul Magic loves racing at Cartmel, and since the course stages just eight days racing a year, it’s no surprise to see his name on the racecard. Today he had race 30 under rules, and race 10 at Cartmel. He’s won six times there already, but never anywhere else. Two years ago he had five successive races there and won four of them.
His trainer said, “He’s quite a slow horse at home and the fences are quite close together at Cartmel, so maybe it’s down to that, to maybe it’s just a remarkable coincidence. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason,” she told the Racing Post, “but it’s probably because Cartmel is such a unique course and everything plays to his liking.”
If he wins today’s handicap chase over two miles one and a half furlongs, it will be a seventh course and distance win, and earn him a place in the record books as the joint highest winner at the course. Not bad for a horse that cost just £800 at the Doncaster sales.
