With Hope, a 100-1 outsider trained by Brendan Powell, became panicky while in the stalls and attempted her escape under the gates, becoming a wedged for a time, in the process.

When set free from the stalls, the mare collapsed onto the course and stayed in a prone position for quite a while, as the other starters were all dismounted.

With Hope was finally placed into the horse ambulance and whisked away for further attention which allowed the mile-and-a-half heat, which was scheduled to start at 7.50, to eventually get underway almost 30 minutes later than planned.

The decision was made by officials at Kempton to delay the subsequent races instead of attempting to make up the lost time, with the last race due off at 9.45, some 25 minutes later than the original schedule.
