Givemethebeatboys heading to Haydock after Curragh victory

Givemethebeatboys put his Royal Ascot disappointment behind him when getting back to winning ways in the FBD Hotels And Resorts Heritage Hotel Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh.

Jessica Harrington’s sprinter was quietly fancied to run a big race in the Commonwealth Cup having pushed Bucanero Fuerte close in the Lacken Stakes, but he was never going at any stage and trailed in last of the 14 runners behind Inisherin.

Given plenty of time to get over that and back on home soil, he came with a late rattle under Shane Foley to take the Group Three spoils.

Before he appeared on the scene it appeared another big Irish sprint was due for export, with British raiders Shartash and Electric Storm hitting the front.

However, both faded late on and it was 11-4 favourite Kind Of Blue, another British runner, who appeared set to give Harrington’s charge the most to do, but he went down by a head. My Mate Alfie was third.

Assistant trainer Kate Harrington said: “It’s lovely for him to win as the Sands family (part-owners Bronsan Racing) had a tragic farming accident this week and the funeral is today.

“It’s great to get the horse back on track after Ascot. He had an abscess underneath his lip the size of a golf ball and had an operation to have it removed about three weeks ago.

“Shane said he took a little blow half a furlong down, so he’ll improve plenty from that.

“I’d say all roads lead now to Haydock for the Betfair Sprint Cup. He did a lovely bit of work in Naas last week. Shane said he gave him a feel today like he hadn’t done before, and he’ll improve again.”

The sponsors make him 16-1 from 25s for next month’s Haydock feature.

Coventry runner Givemethebeatboys sells for £1.1million

Coventry Stakes contender Givemethebeatboys was bought for £1.1million at the Goffs London Sale on the eve of his Royal Ascot run.

The Bungle Inthejungle colt changed hands for €11,000 at the autumn yearling sales back in November, but after winning each of his two starts in the colours of Theresa Marnane, he topped the sale when bought by Bronson Racing.

Trained by Jessica Harrington, Givemethebeatboys is set to be partnered by Frankie Dettori in Tuesday’s juvenile Group Two.

The select sale also featured Norfolk Stakes entry No Nay Mets, who was a Gulfstream Park winner for trainer George Weaver last month, and he went to Tuckernuck Stables for £800,000.

Australian training team Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott bought last year’s top lot Hoo Ya Mal for £1.2m and they were in action again, picking up two lots in conjunction with Johnny McKeever.

Cuban Dawn, placed in two of his three starts for Jim Bolger, cost them £300,000 while they paid £260,000 for New Endeavour, winner of two his seven starts for Roger Varian.

The first-named runner is in the Golden Gates Stakes, while New Endeavour is entered for both the Britannia and Buckingham Palace Stakes.

Givemethebeatboys books Ascot ticket at the Curragh

Jessica Harrington’s Givemethebeatboys maintained his unbeaten record with a narrow victory in the GAIN Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh.

A winner at Navan on his debut just a fortnight ago, he was sent off an 11-1 chance in what looked a strong Group Three on paper as five of the six runners were defending perfect starts to their careers.

The only one beaten on debut, Adrian Murray’s Valiant Force, had been second and he set a scorching gallop down the centre under Colin Keane but started to weaken a furlong out.

At that point Noche Magica looked sure to collect having gone by the eventual winner, but Paddy Twomey’s colt began to tire while Aidan O’Brien’s His Majesty made a run up the rail, only for Givemethebeatboys to poke his head in front in between the pair and win by a head under Shane Foley.

O’Brien’s Democracy, his apparent first string under Ryan Moore, disappointed in last while the winner is now 12-1 for the Coventry at Royal Ascot with Coral.

Assistant trainer Kate Harrington said: “It’s great to kick off the day with a Group Three winner. He was very professional out there and he out battled the other horses the whole way to the line.

“He was very impressive when he won at Navan, a furlong down you’d think ‘how is this horse going to win?’ and he put his head down and galloped the whole way to the line.

“He hated the ground that day and was green. He’s learned an awful lot from that and will learn an awful lot from today, he’ll be even more competitive the next day when we go to Ascot.”

O’Brien had already been on the mark in the opening Tally Ho Stud Irish EBF (C&G) Maiden with Unquestionable.

Third on his debut in a Listed race, he appreciated the step up to six furlongs and the 4-6 favourite bounded four and a quarter lengths clear of Mr Saturday.

The Ballydoyle handler indicted the Coventry Stakes would be next, for which Coral make him a 12-1 chance.

“We’re delighted with him. We felt he’d appreciate the step up, it was big ask to throw him in over five first time in a stakes race, he’s going to get even further than this probably,” said O’Brien.

“Ryan was very happy with him. He went to the line very strong.

“It’s very hard to beat a run and he had a good run. He looks like a Coventry horse.”

Johnny Murtagh saddled the first two home in the Listed FBD Hotels & Resorts Orby Stakes as Mashhoor (2-1 favourite) and Ben Coen held off Annerville by a length and a half.

“We were surprised with the way he won, we thought he would improve a bit,” said Murtagh.

“When he got a rating of 102 this looked like the perfect race, although a mile and a half was a little unknown.

“We went to Ascot last year and the ground was firm, he probably didn’t enjoy that. We’ll make an entry for him but there are plenty of options.”

Andy Oliver also saddled the first two in the Finaly Volvo Handicap as Betterdaysrcoming (16-1) beat Semblance Of Order by a head.

“I asked the boys for a dead-heat and we very nearly got it!” joked Oliver.

“We’ll think of the Britannia at Ascot for him.”

Joseph O’Brien’s Trustyourinstinct made a smart winning debut in the Bet Builder At Novibet Irish EBF (C&G) Maiden.

The trainer had the morning odds-on favourite with Up And Under, placed in a couple of Derby trials, but he was taken out meaning his stablemate was sent off the 11-4 market leader and he showed a decisive turn of foot under Declan McDonogh.
