The Shortlist, 22nd January 2014

A fine run from 16/1 Woolfall Sovereign in third yesterday, but not much else from our quartet, alas. It's hardly scintillating action on Wednesday either, but there are some interesting profile fits, including Frankie Dettori's return on a 20/1 dark horse...

Today's racecards are here.

2.30 Lin - Exemplary e/w - 20/1 bet365
2.30 Lin - Arch Villain - 9/2 Seanie Mac
2.40 Cat - Hit The Top - 7/2 Seanie Mac
4.05 Lin - Resonare - 9/4 bet365

The Shortlist is a simple concept: I go through the Race Analysis Reports each day to find horses which I consider to be of interest. I then publish that list of horses here. Some will win, many will lose. It is hoped that the winners will cover the losers and leave a bit of gravy on the punting platter. Now, before I go on, I need to make (labour!) a really important point. And it is this: the Race Analysis Reports are deliberately interpretive.

That is, different people will highlight different horses depending on whether they're using the win or place statistics, and which columns they sort on (based on which elements they consider most important in a given race). So, these will be the horses on MY shortlist. Feel free to do with them what you will. You may have a different shortlist, and you are most certainly encouraged to go and play with the numbers to find what works best for you.

As regular readers will know, it makes absolute sense to get the best price you can about any selection you're backing. Put another way, it makes no sense whatsoever to accept a shorter price than the best available unless you've got too much money and are keen to give some away! 😉

So, if you don't already have accounts with all the main bookmakers, you should get them. Seriously. Not only will they give you free bets when you start, but you'll also - more importantly - always get the best value on any bet you make by ensuring you take the top price. It's just daft not to.

Here at geegeez, we've got a special software tool which takes the hard (and dull) work of opening accounts, and makes it easy. You fill out a single form, and our software does the rest, opening up to twelve accounts for you with all the major bookmakers.

Just click here to put it to work for you.

Hi Matt. Some great new stuff on the site – thank you. Just for interest, is there any way that the new racecards can be sorted in race order rather than meetings order? Also, wondered about your thoughts on WT for those of us still plugging away with it. Good shout with Woolfall yesterday by the way; good ew value at 16/1! Best wishes

      Hi Johnners

Good to hear from you. There are no plans to sort racecards by time, I’m afraid, and it won’t be in the next tranche of features either. I have to try to prioritize based on what I perceive to be the most important elements, and the next batch has already been sent to the developer.

For info, it includes (though they may not all be feasible)…
      – Updates to inline trainer form on racecard
      – Add gender to form tab
      – Pace percentages
      – Tipping League integrated into racecards
      – Head to Head report

Re WT, the NH trainers are going well, albeit from a limited number of runners, and Anthony’s got some very well handicapped horses, though the stable is currently going steady after a few disappointed last week. They’ll be over-priced on their return, in my view.

p.s. I should also say that the subsequent performances of James Tate and, especially, Bill Turner have been very (VERY) frustrating.
