In spite of his defeat at Goowood on Tuesday, Theology is thought to be headed directly to the Ladbrokes St Leger.
Connections of the colt feel his true form was not present in his Goodwood run and think that the September Classic at Doncaster will bring out his best form.
Theology, who took second place in the Queen's Vase on his prior run, could only manage sixth place in the Gordon Stakes.
"He ran a bit free. It was too short a trip for him - a mile and a half - and he was a little bit gassy," said Harry Herbert, racing manager to owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.
"Nonetheless he ran perfectly respectably. He's better than that, though. If he hadn't have run too free he certainly would have finished closer.
"The plan is to go for the St Leger and probably run him next in the Leger to give him more time.
"He's developing all the time. He's very much next year's Cup horse but the Leger, Doncaster and the trip will suit him."
