The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup next month breaks new ground with the inclusion of an all female team, which will be captained by Hayley Turner. She will be joined by leading North American jockeys Chantal Sutherland and Emma-Jayne Wilson.
Each of the three has stamped her name in the record books. Turner was the first female to ride a Group 1 winner in Britain. Sutherland was first to ride in a Dubai World Cup, and Wilson rode a Canadian Triple Crown winner before any other woman.
Three other teams will compete for the Cup at Ascot on 11August. The European team is headed by Frankie Dettori, and has three time German champion Andreas Suborics alongside him. The third member of the side is Italy’s new champion, 19 year old Christian Demuro, rider of 222 winners during 2011. He’ll be able to pick up some tips from his older brother Mirco, who won the title in Italy five times before moving to Britain to test his skills.
The Rest of the World team is drawn from far and wide. Vastly experienced Japanese rider Yutaka Take heads it up, and is joined by Dubai World Cup (Well Armed) winning jockey Aaron Gryder from America and former leading apprentice from Hong Kong Matthew Chadwick.
The make up of the Britain and Ireland team won’t be announced until later, but it is the women’s team that is making the early running. William Hill have them at 7/2 to win the tournament, and it’s the same price for any of the three to be leading rider on the day and pick up the Silver Saddle.
Nick Smith, Ascot’s head of communications said, “This promises to be the most exciting Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in the event’s history, with the first all female team and more international jockeys taking part than ever before, some legends in their own countries and some who are rapidly rising young stars.”
