Don’t forget to check the daily stat pack from Wednesday onwards when updated statistics from the previous day will be available.

A particularly interesting week in prospect with July now upon us, a month that introduces two-year-old handicap events (Nursery races) which begin at Haydock on Friday.

Using the statistics from two trainers over the last four years (2009-2012), we can see how trainers who do not saddle many two-year-old runners have faired during the period, compared to the list of stats further below which itemise last year’s findings.

TUESDAY 02/07:

Brighton:

Number of races at Brighton: 43

Favourite stats: 21 (48.8%--includes joint and co favourites)

Odds on ratio: 3/6 (50.0%)

Leading trainers of winners at Brighton in 2013:

3/5--Pat Phelan (8/1-2/1*-11/10*)

2/2--Jo Hughes (3/1** & 7/4*)

2/3--Tom Dascombe (7/4 & 4/7*)

2/3--Gay Kelleway (7/2 & 5/1)

2/10--Gary Moore (7/1 & 7/2)

2/12--Jamie Osborne (7/4* & 5/1)

2/13--David Evans (5/2 & 7/4*)

41/43 (95.3%) winners were returned at odds of 12/1 or less

Trainers of most beaten favourites:

2--Michael Bell (3/1** & 6/4)

2--Richard Hannon (9/4 & 5/4)

2--John Hills (11/10* & 4/5)

2.15: Six of the fourteen favourites have secured toteplacepot positions during the last decade though successful market leaders from a win perspective have been conspicuous only by their absence.

2.45: Four-year-olds have won the last three (of four) contests whilst all four winners have carried weights ranging between 8-8 and 9-4.  Violet Jordan has saddled three of her last seven runners to winning effect whereby Slatey Hen has to be in the mix. Three of the five favourites have finished in the frame, with two of the relevant horses having won their respective races via four contests to date.

3.45: The well documented 5/6 stats boasted by pilot Nicole Nordblad at Brighton are put to the test here aboard last week’s facile course winner Beacon Lady, albeit a drop in distance might not be ideal.  The Haafhd filly had the speed to win over a mile here at Brighton in September however, whereby the four-year-old can be another winner for in form trainer William Knight.  Both (4/1) favourites have finished out with the washing thus far.

4.15: Three-year-olds have won four of the last seven contests whilst eight of the last nine winners have carried weights of 9-1 or more.  David Simcock’s Galileo raider Brigh is the only horse with ticks in both boxes which is especially significant, as David had saddled two gold and two silver medallists via his last six runners at the time of writing.  Eight of the eleven favourites have secured toteplacepot positions (three winners).  The biggest priced recorded winner to date was sent off at just 15/2 back in 2005.

Listed Gala Stakes scheduled for 4.00: Four favourites have won during the last decade whilst five-year-olds have won three of the last four contests.

Class 3 mixed vintage handicap over ten furlongs due to be contested at 4.35: Three-year-olds have won six renewals during the last decade and vintage representatives come to this year’s gig on a four timer.  Four of the last six contests have been secured by favourites of one description or another, with nine of the last eleven winners having been sent off at 8/1 or less.  Mark Johnston held seven options for the race earlier in the week in a contest he has secured three times during the last decade.

Fourteen furlong handicap scheduled for 5.05: Nine contests has slipped by since the last successful favourite was recorded, though eight gold medallists during the period were sent off at a top price of 6/1.  Seven of the last eight winners were burdened by a minimum weight of 8-13.

Three-year-old seven furlong handicap scheduled for 1.30:  This is a nice touch from Coral as the race is in memory of Malcolm Palmer who died earlier this year.  I had the pleasure of working with Malcolm when I was an Odds Compiler for the firm back in the nineties and you could not wish to meet a nicer man.  Five favourites have won this event during the last decade which is a great ratio in this sector of the sport.  Richard Hannon has saddled three of the last seven winners and the trainer held six options for this year’s event at the time of writing.  Five of the last six winners have carried 8-13 or less.

‘Coral Challenge’ scheduled for 2.40: Four-year-olds have secured six of the last seven renewals, whilst last year’s successful (2/1) favourite brought an end to a run of gold medallists which were returned at 33/1-18/1--11/1-10/1-7/1 since the previous (7/2) market leader obliged back in 2006.  Five of the last seven winners have carried a minimum weight of nine stones.

‘Distaff’ event scheduled for 3.15: Four favourites have won during the last decade during which time, nine winners have scored at a top price of 9/1.  Sir Michael Stoute saddled three winners during the study period and his only entry on Monday was his recent impressive Goodwood (debut) winner Integral.

‘Coral Eclipse’ scheduled for 3.45: Aidan O’Brien has saddled four winners during the last eleven years and his three representatives on Monday were (arguably) headed up by the recent ‘Queen Anne’ winner Declaration Of War, especially with Camelot having failed to reproduce his true form as a four-year-old thus far.  Favourites have won three of the last four renewals before which time, six renewals had slipped by without a successful market leader having been registered.  Nine favourites have secured toteplacepot positions during the last eleven years.

Two mile event due to be contested at 4.25: Last year’s successful 3/1 favourite was the first market leader to prevail since 2004.  That said, nine of the last ten winners have scored at a top price of 8/1.  Five of the last ten favourites have secured toteplacepot positions, statistics which include three winners.

Class 4 ten furlong handicap scheduled for 5.00: Just one favourite has obliged during the eleven year study period during which time, gold medallists at 33/1-20/1-16/1-12/1 have been recorded.  Six of the last eight winners carried a maximum weight of nine stones.
