2.30: Richard Hannon has won two of the last four renewals of the ‘Molecomb’ and it’s worth noting that Richard saddled four of the eighteen two-year-old winners at the ‘Glorious Goodwood’ meeting during the last two years.  Six favourites have won during the last sixteen years (level stake profit of £449.23 to one hundred pound stakes), whilst nine market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions during the study period.

3.05:  Three-year-olds have secured four of the last six renewals of the Group 2 Lennox Stakes.  Three favourites has scored via the last fourteen renewals, whilst nine market leaders have claimed toteplacepot positions during the study period.

4.15: Nine of the last thirteen gold medallists were returned at odds of 4/1 or less (four winning favourites), though a 50/1 winner in 2004 was only cheered on by the layers.  Mark Johnston (Lyn Valley) is the only trainer to have saddled two winners of this event during the last decade.

4.50: Eight of the last nine winners have carried 9-3 or more to victory, whilst three-year-olds have won three of the last seven contests.  Eleven of the last seventeen market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions (four winners).  Four-year-olds come to the gig on a hat trick this time around.

5.25: The last nine renewals have produced just one successful favourite during which time, five gold medallists were returned at odds ranging between 14/1 & 28/1.  David Nicholls (Hamoody & Mister Manannan) has secured three of the last eleven renewals.  Six-year-olds have won the last three contests, with Mister Manannan being one of five vintage representatives this time around.

Odds on ratio: 5/6 (83.3%)

Leading trainers at Goodwood in 2013:

6/17--Amanda Perrett (8/1-7/2*-5/2*-8/1-4/1*-9/2)

Trainers of most beaten favourites:

3--Clive Cox (9/2-9/2**-Evs)

3--Richard Hannon (2/1-6/4-5/2)

2--Sir Michael Stoute (13/8 & 6/4)

Ten furlong three-year-old handicap scheduled for 2.15: Ten of the last twelve winners have carried weights of 9-0 or less, whilst Mark Johnston (25/1 runner-up twelve months ago) is looking for his fifth winner in the race in the last fifteen years.  Favourites have won six of the last twelve renewals of this opening event on day three of the meeting. Ten of the last sixteen market leaders have snared toteplacepot positions.

‘Richmond Stakes’ due to be contested at 2.45: Richard Hannon has secured four of the last five of this Group 2 Richmond Stakes and with three penultimate stage entries, Richard was obviously intent on saddling another winner.  Five winning favourites to report in ‘recent’ seasons (2012, 2011, 2010, 2006 & 1999), whilst nine of the last seventeen market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions during the last thirteen years.

‘Goodwood Cup’ scheduled for 3.15: Favourites have won seven of the last nine contests, whilst ten of the last seventeen market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions.  The biggest priced winner during the last decade was returned at 8/1.  Irish trainers have secured three of the last seven contests.

Fourteen furlong Group 3 ‘Lillie Langtry’ event scheduled for 3.45: Four-year-olds come to the gig on a five-timer whilst four of the twelve favourites have claimed toteplacepot positions (one winner) via the last ten renewals.

Seven furlong juvenile (‘New Ham‘) event scheduled for 4.20: Barry Hills held a decent record in this race and his son Charlie was very unlucky last year with Golden Causeway who failed to secure a run up the infamous Goodwood rail.  Out of interest, Charlie held four options earlier in the week.  Five clear market leaders and one joint favourite have won during the last sixteen years.  Nine of the seventeen market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions.

Class 2 seven furlong 3YO handicap scheduled for 4.55: Four of the last six winners have carried weights of 8-12 or more to victory. No favourite has prevailed during the study period (fifteen years), whilst eight market leaders claimed toteplacepot positions since I started looking into the contest.  Melvin The Grate was Andrew Balding’s only option in the race at the time of writing, the trainer having secured two of the last five contests.  Andrew’s Danehill Dancer gelding might struggle to get into this event if the top weights retain their entries whereby his alternative similar option (scheduled 2.20 Class 3 event at Newmarket on Saturday) might be worth investigating.

Mixed vintage handicap event for apprentice riders scheduled for 5.25: Four-year-olds have won four of the last five renewals, whilst three favourite have obliged during the last nine years.  John Hills has his team in flying form at the time of writing and Xinbama caught the eye earlier in the week, especially with Shelley Birkett (4/12 stats for John) potentially aboard the hat trick seeker.  That said, Xinbama held three entries this week at different venues.

Group 3 twelve furlong event scheduled for 1.55 (Glorious Stakes): It’s interesting to note that Lady Cecil only had six potential runners at Goodwood this week, two of which (Songbird and Wold Coco) were booked to contest this event.  That said, Luca Cumani (coming into the race on a hat trick) has won four of the last nine renewals and his only option at the five-day stage was Mount Athos.  Four-year-olds have won eight of the last twelve renewals, whilst securing twelve of the last twenty available toteplacepot positions. Five favourites have won during the last sixteen years, whilst nine of the eighteen market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions.

Group 3 ‘Thoroughbred Stakes’ over a mile due to be contested at 2.30: Ten of the last nineteen favourites have claimed toteplacepot positions, statistics which include three winners.  Richard Hannon, Mark Johnston and Brian Meehan have all saddled two winners of this event during the last decade, with all three trainers holding entries at the time of writing.  Whipper’s Boy (Brian Meehan’s only option) is perhaps the most intriguing entry given that Keiren Fallon’s intended mount last ran in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at this meeting twelve months ago.

One mile ‘Heritage Handicap’ scheduled for 3.05: Mark Johnston has saddled the last three winners of the contest when represented and the trainer held five options at the penultimate stage.  This is the same number of potential runners for this event as was the case last year leading up to the stable’s 7/1 winner from two runners who eventually faced the starter.  Four-year-olds have won five renewals during the last eleven years, whilst seven of the last eight winners were burdened with a maximum weight of 9-3. Two favourites have prevailed in the last sixteen years, whilst seven market leaders claimed toteplacepot positions in the process.  Thirteen of the last seventeen winners last ran at either Ascot, Newmarket or Sandown.

Group 2 ‘King George’ event scheduled for 3.40: Four and five-year-olds have (equally) shared six of the last nine renewals.  Five favourites have scored during the last sixteen years, whilst nine market leaders claimed toteplacepot positions in the process.

Six furlong Nursery event due to be contested at 4.15: The last nine winners have carried a maximum burden of 9-2.  Four favourites have won during the last fifteen years, whilst ten of the sixteen market leaders have secured toteplacepot positions in the process.

‘Oak Tree Stakes’ scheduled for 4.50: Three-year-olds have won eleven of the last sixteen renewals.  Five favourites have won during the last sixteen years, whilst nine of the sixteen market leaders throughout the study period claimed toteplacepot positions.  Ten different trainers have saddled winners during the last decade.

Eleven furlong Class 3 three-year-old handicap scheduled for 5.25: Six of the eight winners carried weights of 9-2 or less, whilst four gold medallists were returned at odds ranging between 14/1 & 25/1.

Six furlong Class 2 handicap due to be contested at 2.05: David Nicholls has snared six of the fourteen renewals thus far with David holding ten options this year at the time of writing.  Just two of the last eleven favourites have finished in the frame (no winners) since four consecutive market leaders obliged between 2000 and 2003.  The last nine winners have carried a minimum burden of nine stones.

Class 2 handicap over twelve furlongs scheduled for 2.40: Eight of the last ten winners have carried weights of 9-1 or less whilst we still await the first winning favourite since the turn of the Millennium.  Mark Johnston was responsible for seven of the twenty-four five-day declarations in a race Mark has secured twice in the last five years.

‘Nassau Stakes’ scheduled for 3.15: Three-year-olds have won nine of the last fourteen renewals, whilst market leaders have secured thirteen toteplacepot positions during the study period.  The biggest priced winner during the period was returned at 11/2.  Five favourites won during the last decade, whilst Sir Henry Cecil saddled three of the last four winners.  Lady Cecil’s only option was Hot Snap at the time of writing with Tom Queally already booked in the plate.

‘Stewards Cup’ due to be contested at 3.50: Thirteen of the last seventeen winners have contested Royal Ascot’s Wokingham Stakes en route to lifting this prize, whist thirteen winners during the period hailed from the four and five-year-old ranks.  Roger Charlton and David Nicholls have each saddled three winners during the study period.

Ten of the fourteen favourites during the last decade have secured toteplacepot positions, a phenomenal record in such a competitive event.  Those stats include three successful favourites which equates to market leaders having produced a level stake profit of eight and a half points during the last eleven years.  Six of the last eight winners have carried a minimum burden of 9-1.

Seven furlong juvenile maiden scheduled for 4.25: Richard Hannon has won four of the last ten renewals, statistics which include three of the last six contests. Seven of the last fifteen favourites have claimed toteplacepot positions, whilst three market leaders have won, though the last eleven ‘jollies’ have all been beaten.

Nursery event scheduled for 5.00: Eleven of the last fourteen winners of this two-year-old handicap event carried weights of 9-2 or less. Four clear market leaders, one co and one joint favourite have scored during the study period.  Richard Hannon has saddled two of the last five winners.

Class 3 three-year-old handicap scheduled for 5.35 over the minimum trip: Only one favourite has obliged during the last eleven years during which time, eight gold medallists were burdened with 8-8 or less, statistics which include one dead heat scenario.

Wolverhampton:

Mark Johnston’s Wolverhampton raiders can rarely be ignored, even though level stake profits are conspicuous by their absence during the last five years.  This is hardly surprising given that mark has saddled 456 runners at the venue during the study period.  Mark’s winners have been consistent irrespective of age whereby his runners must simply be kept on the right side, especially from a toteplacepot perspective.
