Dermot Weld York Runners Are Feared....

With the four-day York Ebor Festival starting this week (Weds-Sat), Andy Newton’s got six handlers to look out for with their runners on the Knavesmire.

WILLIAM HAGGAS: With 66 winners this season the William Haggas team are ticking along very nicely, while with over £1.1mill won in total prize money then all is rosy in that department too. They sent out 12 juvenile winners from 54 runners this term too, but the bulk of their winners (36) have been with their 3 year-olds. In terms of their York track stats with a 25% strike-rate in recent season at the venue then anything they run this week should be respected. These winners have been spread evenly across all age groups with a 24% record with their 2 year-olds, 29% record with their 3 year-olds and a 23% strike-rate with their older horses. They are also showing a very healthy +£35 level stakes profit over the last 5 seasons at the track.
York Track Stats: 21 winners from their last 83 runners, 25%

JAMES FANSHAWE: At the time of writing this stable could not be in much better form with 6 of their last 7 runners going in. They are currently on 27 winners for the season from just 117 runners and are showing a +£29 level stakes profit. They’ve only had 1 juvenile winner from 3 runners, but traditionally their horses come on with age and this is backed up with 11 winners from 37 runners in the 4+year-old bracket. They’ve had 3 York winners from their last 15 sent to post (20%) – and all of those came in the 4+year-old bracket too. Looking at their entries they’ve 4-5 engaged at this stage with High Jinx in Friday’s Lonsdale Cup a high-profile runner.

EVE JOHNSON HOUGHTON: Only 16 winners this season so far, but they only generally get around the 20-30 mark anyway. 10 of those 16 successes have been with their 3 year-olds, but do note any juvenile runners as they have sent out 5 winners with their 2 year-olds. In fact, looking at their York course stats then it’s with their juveniles they’ve excelled – they are 2 from their last 3 juvenile runners at York. Scanning ahead to their entries they’ve Spillway, Mappa Mundi and Alutiq to look out for.
York Track Stats: 2 winners from their last 6 runners, 33%

MARCUS TREGONING: Not having the best of seasons with just 7 winners, so they will be hoping the return to one of their favourite tracks will help. At this stage they’ve got just Askar Tau running in Friday’s Lonsdale Cup, but he won this race back in 2009 and, therefore, has a squeak. At York they are currently 3 from their last 12 runners – being 1-from-2 with their 3 year-olds and 2-from-9 with their older horses.
York Track Stats: 3 winners from their last 12 runners, 25%

DERMOT WELD: Popular Irish trainer is going great guns on the flat back home with 47 winners, and despite not having a winner in the UK yet this season (0 from 5), he’ll be another trainer hoping to cash in on his excellent record at York. At this stage they’ve got Olympiad, Pale Mimosa, Unaccompanied and Sleeping Beauty entered across the week, and with 2 winners from their last 3 runners at the track anything they eventually run should be respected. They are 1 from 2 with their 3 year-olds and 1 from 1 with their older horses on the Knavesmire.

ED DE GILES: Kingsgate Choice is a possible for Ed de Giles in the Nunthorpe on Friday, but he’s also entered over in Ireland this weekend so we’ll have to see where he ends up. The yard have fired in 12 winners in 2013 so far and are showing a +£17 level stakes profit. More importantly they’ve already banked more prize money (£136k) then they’ve done in a season before. Interestingly all of their 12 winners in 2013 have been with their older horses,  but, that said, they’ve only had 3 runners outside the 4+year-old age bracket.
