An undoubted highlight on the UK flat racing calendar, Goodwood is ‘glorious’ for many reasons. Firstly, it’s in a beautiful setting to the north of Trundle Iron Age hill fort, with the grandstand offering spectacular views of the entire course.

The course itself is also one of the more complex in the UK with varying degrees of undulations around this right-handed, flat race track which tends to benefit horses that race close to the pace at the front. Goodwood has a loop-shaped course as well as a straight six furlong course for shorter sprint races.

Goodwood plays host to two of the 31 Group 1 races hosted across the UK flat racing calendar: the Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. Other notable race meetings include the Stewards’ Cup, the King George Stakes and Goodwood Cup.

The biggest annual meeting at Goodwood is its five-day festival affectionately known as Glorious Goodwood, one of the highlights on the summer sporting calendar. The festival always attracts the world’s best horses and jockeys – including Frankel prior to his retirement and the likes of Richard Hughes, Ryan Moore and William Buick on the saddle. It attracts racegoers from far and wide to soak up the unique racing and social experience.

Goodwood has always been a racecourse that innovates: it was the first racecourse to host Sunday race meetings. The racecourse is also home to the world-famous Festival of Speed, which attracts more than 100,000 motor racing fanatics featuring F1 machines as well as classic cars and motorbikes which climb the infamous Goodwood hill.

GeeGeez says: “Goodwood is renowned for being one of the fastest courses in the country, so horses that are quick out of the gate and can get into their stride early tend to perform better here.

“The draw can also prove influential on the looped course, with higher numbers prevailing in the sprint races when the ground is running fast.”
