Naas racecourse is situated in County Kildare, 30km from Dublin, and hosts a total of 18 race meetings each year. Those meetings are a mix of flat and national hunt racing.
Naas hosts a Grade 1 race over hurdles. In 2015 their Novice Hurdle was upgraded to Grade 1 status. On the level, the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes, which is run in May each year, is the highlight of the calendar.
Naas Course Characteristics
The oval course at Naas has a circuit distance of around a mile and a half. It is a galloping course that has a long, stiff straight which is 4f long. There is an additional 2f chute heading into the 4f straight to allow 5f and 6f races to be run over a straight course.
Naas Top Flat Jockeys
Colin Keane is clear as the top jockey at Naas currently with 68 wins from his 398 rides on the flat. Kevin Manning and Shane Foley are next best at 52 wins and 47 wins respectively.
In terms of the most effective jockeys at Naas, we’ll have to look at the win strike rates. Ryan Moore has 22 wins from 60 rides here at Naas which gives him a strike rate of 36.67. Despite having the best strike rate out of any flat jockey, that win record will still return a small loss to level stakes. Donnacha O’Brien has a strong win ratio of 25.17%. Both jockeys clearly benefitting from the connection with Aidan O’Brien at one time or another.
Naas Top Jumps Jockeys
Things are much closer at the top of the Naas top jumps jockey table with Mark Walsh leading on 44 wins but Paul Townend just behind him with 40 wins at the time of writing. Davy Russell is a few wins behind that pair with 37 wins.
Patrick Mullins has arguably been the most effective jockey at Naas over jumps with a win strike rate of 30.14%. That compares favourably with that of Mark Walsh who has the most wins here but his strike rate is only 17.6%, just over half that of Patrick Mullins.
Naas Top Flat Trainers
Aidan O’Brien is the best trainer at Naas as far as number of wins is concerned. He’s well clear of Ger Lyons’ 75 with a huge 124 wins himself. However backing all of those Aidan O’Brien runners would have resulted in a win PL of -108.82 whereas Ger Lyons’ runners here have yielded a level stakes profit of 6.51.
In terms of winning strike rates at Naas Aidan O’Brien is up there once again with a win percentage of 20.33%. Ger Lyons is up there too with a strike rate of 17.01%.
Naas Top Jumps Trainers
It comes as no surprise to see Willie Mullins at the top of the Naas top trainers table over jumps. He has 97 wins here at the time of writing which is more than twice that of the next best trainers Noel Meade and Gordon Elliot who both have 40 wins apiece.
Willie Mullins also boasts the best strike rate here at Naas with 31.8% of his runners winning and despite the majority of those being very well fancied in the betting they have been profitable to follow blind with a win PL of 2.85.
Naas Draw Bias
Past data shows a quite pronounced draw bias over 5f at Naas.
A low draw PRB (Percentage of Rivals Beaten) of 0.56 is pretty strong and low draws have massively outperformed middle and high draws over the past decade or so at the minimum distance. There also seems to be a similar bias over 10f and also a mile (although not quite as strong at a mile). The draw bias seems negligible at other distances.
Naas Pace Bias
Naas does favour those that race to the fore at many distances but that is often a trend across nearly all racecourses. The race distances on the flat where front runners seem to do best are 5f, 7f and 12f.
Over obstacles prominent racers tend to do best rather than front runners, although those that race from the front are advantaged compared to mid division and those held up. In fact hold up horses have a terrible record with an IV of just 0.28 combined at all distances over hurdles.
