Beverley Racecourse
Located within walking distance of the historic East Yorkshire market town of Beverley, this tough right-handed track is a firm favourite. With horse racing present at Beverley since 1767, it’s one of the least pretentious racecourses on the UK circuit but certainly one of the more agreeable ones to race.
There are generally 18-19 race meetings held at Beverley each year in the backdrop of the rolling hills of East Riding. The course features a three-furlong uphill climb towards the finish line, which is often a great testing ground for those with insufficient stamina levels. Its meetings also tend to attract many promising juveniles that go on to prove themselves at much higher levels as the season progresses.
The remainder of the course is predominantly flat but its tight turns can make for interesting racing. Beverley’s most prestigious races are two Listed events – the Hilary Needler Trophy for two-year-olds in May and the Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes raced over five furlongs for three-year-olds and up.
Significant sums of money have been invested in Beverley down the years, with several hundred thousand spent on a new sprinkler system that keeps its turf in the best possible condition and ensures a high standard of racing throughout the year.
Geegeez says: “It’s no secret that Beverley has the most pronounced draw bias on any five furlong UK racecourse. The tight right-hand bend and the fact the ground itself runs away to the left means that a low draw on the inside rail is considerably advantageous.
“The five furlong course takes no prisoners for two-year-old juveniles particularly when the going is soft, as it’s uphill all the way. Be sure to check for trainers that have long prevailed around Beverley or for horses with encouraging bloodlines.”
