Breeders' Cup
Filly & Mare Turf

Introduction

The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf is a middle distance Grade 1 which has consistently drawn the best female turf horses not just from the United States but around the world.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf History

Established in 1999, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf was inaugurated to provide a platform exclusively for female horses to showcase their prowess on grass. It was a notable addition to the Breeders’ Cup series broadening the scope of competition and allowing for a more diverse field of entries. The race has been staged at various distances due to differing inner turf track configurations, and is most commonly run at 1 3/8 miles or 1 1/4 miles.

Open to fillies and mares aged three years and up, the race has a purse of $2 million. In 2025 at Del Mar, the race will again be contested over one mile and three furlongs.

Memorable Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Winners

Ouija Board (2004, 2006)

The British mare Ouija Board was so dominant that she not only won the race in 2004 but came back to reclaim her title in 2006. Trained by Ed Dunlop and ridden first by Kieren Fallon and then by Frankie Dettori, she remains one of the most iconic figures in the race’s history.

Sistercharlie (2018)

Trained by Chad Brown and the most recent of his four winners in the race, Sistercharlie delivered an electrifying performance in 2018 to overcome a stacked field and add another feather in her conditioner’s Graded turf stakes cap. Sistercharlie would try twice more to regain her crown, enduring a luckless run when third in 2019 before a sixth place finish in her final race in 2020.

Tuesday (2022)

It was a case of 18th time lucky for legendary Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien who finally struck Filly & Mare Turf gold with his game filly, Tuesday. Having previously won every Breeders’ Cup race at a mile and beyond on the lawns, Tuesday completed the set for her handler by coming five wide into the stretch and grabbing the trailblazing In Italian under the shadow of the post. It required a full throttle ride from jockey Ryan Moore to deny Chad Brown his fifth Filly & Mare Turf crown.
