Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

Introduction

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf is an American Thoroughbred horse race that is part of the annual Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The race was inaugurated in 2007 to provide a platform for two-year-old turf horses, and was upgraded to Grade 2 status in 2009 before elevating to its current Grade 1 level in 2011.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf is run over a distance of one mile on the turf. While it is open to both colts and fillies, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf caters for the females.

The race has been won by a European entrant in 11 of the 17 renewals to 2023, and both times the Cup has been hosted by Del Mar.

There was drama in the 2021 renewal as pre-race favourite Modern Games was inadvertently scratched by the local stewards before being allowed to race for prize money only. Those on Modern Games in the final leg of their Pick 4’s, 5’s and 6’s were left to curse their luck as the horse won but the replacement favourite could not follow him home for wagering purposes.

One of the most memorable renewals of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf was the 2015 edition in Keeneland, where Hit It A Bomb, from the parking lot stall 14, got up to score under an inspired Ryan Moore:
